Being a woman can be hard. Especially when it means menstrual pain, cramping, and swelling, and bleeding for a week out of every month.

The pain can be anywhere from not-so-bad, to putting you out of commission for a week.

We as women have to deal with a lot. Worrying about our next period, when its gonna come, making sure we have supplies, and dealing with the pain and hormones every month. It just sucks.

And lets be honest, relying on medication which may not kick in within the next hour or so is unbearable, especially when your cramps are here NOW.

The easiest thing to do is just to medicate until it’s over.

But in the long run, over the counter drugs are still not the best option unless absolutely necessary.

Ibuprofen and Pamprin are honesty the first things I think to reach for when my cramps start up every month. But, I do have a few tricks that I use so that I don’t have to.

Preemptive measures for Menstrual pain

About a year ago, I noticed that my hormones and emotional state was getting worse with every month.

I started having breakdowns more often, ABOUT NOTHING. I would just start crying. A cute dog or baby would be on the TV for just a second, and I’d get emotional.

1. Balance your Hormones with a Supplement

Hormonal imbalances are actually very common now days.

With all the additives and hormones found in dairy and meat products, it’s no wonder that a lot of us feel really off all the time.

I decided that I needed to take something to help with this, so I went to the Vitamin Shoppe to see what I could find.

I found a mushroom complex by Host Defense that has helped significantly, and after taking it for about 9 months now I can say that it has noticeably helped my mood swings and bloating.

This is truly a life saver for me.

You take two capsules every day, not just while you are menstruating, and over time it helps to naturally balance your hormones.

(It does take a few weeks of taking it for you to feel the effects, like most natural supplements)

The reason we have bad cramps, painful hormonal acne, bloating and PMS is due to hormone imbalance.

We don’t HAVE to be in pain every month, and resetting our hormones can be a great first step.

Quick fixes

Sometimes we need something immediately, and that’s usually where medication comes in. If you really need it, go for it. Especially if you’re at work and the pain is debilitating as it can be at times.

If you are at home, here are some good things you can do that will ease the pain.

1. Pickle juice

It sounds gross, I know. Pickle juice (as well as bananas) has potassium in it that is good for easing muscles cramps and helping sore muscles.

While it might sound too out there, taking anywhere from a tablespoon, to sipping at a small teacup for a while will help. I have tried this, I usually do a teacup. You can use any regular brand pickle juice, but I suggest Bubbies Pickles or any natural pickle juice that has been good probiotics and garlic.

2. Heating pad

These are just great all around, and they work wonders for menstrual pain.

If you have one that you can either put in the microwave or an electric one that you can plug in, having that tucked behind your hips or across your waist line with help ease cramps and pains.

(Also: Putting a few drops of lavender oil on the heating pad cover with help with relaxation and sleep. Just make sure that if it’s an electric heating pad that the temperature will die off after a while in case you fall asleep)

3. Bath

I always take baths on my period.

The heat from the water is great for sore, tight muscles and adding Epsom salt and a few drops of lavender oil, which helps with relaxation and blood flow, will make for a very relaxing evening.

4. Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is really important on a nightly basis, but it’s very necessary when it’s your time of the month.

Your body is trying to repair itself, and your body can best do that when it’s at rest.

If you have trouble getting to sleep because of menstrual pain and aches, you can try taking a Melatonin supplement. I take a 5mg chew-able that is strawberry flavored.

Just be aware that it effects everyone differently and you don’t want to take it too often. For me I will be out for a very long while, usually till around the next afternoon.

I hope these help,

Have an awesome, healthy day!
