Living with chronic illness often involves a rollercoaster of symptoms and energy levels. You might’ve heard it referred to as “spoons”. There might be days when you feel like you can conquer the world and days when even getting out of bed seems like a herculean task. During the low days, it’s important to remember that your body is doing its best. Instead of succumbing to guilt for not being as productive as you’d like, practice self-compassion. Embrace the art of listening to your body’s signals and giving it the rest it needs. As someone who also is living with chronic illness, I understand how difficult this is in reality. What I remind myself daily is that I am simply trying my best.

Prioritize Self-Care Without Apology

Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity, especially when you’re dealing with chronic illness. Make a list of activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s reading a book, taking a leisurely bath, or simply sipping your favorite herbal tea. And here’s the kicker – indulge in them without feeling guilty. Prioritizing self-care isn’t selfish; it’s an act of self-love that rejuvenates your spirit and helps you face the challenges ahead. It is actually one of the reasons that I went into business for myself. Since I rely so heavily on my energy levels and how I’m feeling, it would be near impossible for me to work in normal job.

Build a Supportive Network

You might be strong, but even the strongest oak trees sway in the wind. Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, and maybe even online communities of people who understand your journey. Sharing your thoughts and fears can be incredibly therapeutic. And don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it – you’re not burdening others; you’re giving them a chance to support you. It takes real strength to have vulnerability and to express needs to people that love you. One of the best things that I have discovered on my own journey is that people will show up for you if you tell them what you need.

Embrace Flexibility

Living with chronic illness often means adjusting your plans on the fly. It’s frustrating, but it’s also an opportunity to practice flexibility. Instead of fixating on what you can’t do, focus on what you can. Embrace a more relaxed approach to life, where it’s okay to reschedule, postpone, or even cancel plans when your health demands it. Flexibility doesn’t equate to failure; it’s a powerful way to adapt and thrive. I know that is incredibly hard to say no to things especially when they are things that you want to do. But the burn out that comes with overdoing it and not listening to your body makes it not worth it. For me, I have traveled to 25 countries and counting an absolutely love being abroad. That is a really hard thing to do while you are a living with chronic illness. The only way I am done it is to be incredibly flexible. I don’t jam pack days I actually do a lot of what is called slow travel. Highly recommend being flexible.

Celebrate Small Wins

In a world that glorifies big achievements, remember that small victories are worth celebrating too. Completing a simple task on a tough day or managing your symptoms well deserves a pat on the back. Acknowledge these accomplishments and give yourself credit for every step you take towards managing your chronic illness. There are days where I celebrate simply being able to take a shower.

This is one of the most important lessons that I have learned on my own journey. I’ve gotten really good at saying no and having absolutely zero guilt about it.
