Cleaning Hacks for a Non-Toxic Home
Taking steps towards a holistic lifestyle can also mean not opting for “on-brand” cleaning items like we are used to. Or, it could mean using natural products to make our homes smell better, instead of ones that could have harmful effects on our health.
Today I am going to show you 6 Easy cleaning hacks for a non-toxic home.
Cleaning tips for a Non-Toxic home
For everything in our home, there is a tool or product we use to clean it.
Multi-Surface Cleaner
What I Use: 7th Generation – Disinfecting Multi-Surface wipes.
The 7th Generation wipes are SO great. I have found that they work better that the Lysol wipes we had been buying, are non-toxic and are not expensive either.
They have a distinct oregano smell, which I like, and get grease and soap scum off easily. We use them for everything from cleaning the stove to wiping down surfaces in the bathrooms.
Room Freshener
Everyone loves a house that smells good.
It seems more inviting, cozy, and clean. Having clean air is just as important as it smelling clean, here are some ways to clean your breathing space, as well as keep your home smelling nice.
- Himalayan Pink Salt Lamp – Create Negative Ions to help clean the air, and help neutralize the negative effects from electronic devices.
- Beeswax Candles – Clean the air by releasing negative ions, are non-toxic unlike most candles, and can help reduce asthma and allergies.
- Incense – Creating a better atmosphere for concentration, anti-bacteria and creativity. Provides a nice, aromatic smell.
- Essential Oil Diffuser – Get the benefits of using essential oils, soothe nausea, lift spirits, create a better atmosphere, aromatic scent.
Laundry Detergent
There are a lot of green options for laundry detergent, especially considering those with allergies or skin sensitivities. Amazon has their own brand called Presto! which is “Biobased” and Cruelty Free.
Mrs. Meyers Clean Day is a very reliable brand, and they have items ranging from Detergent to hand lotion. Their products are made with essential oils, and plant based ingredients.
Biokleen Laundry Detergent is clean, Eco-friendly and non-toxic. They have an awesome company that uses no artificial fragrances so its easy on sensitive skin types.
Hand soap
What I use: Everyone Meyer Lemon & Mandarin Hand soap
This is my personal favorite hand soap, and it may just be because I love the smell of lemons.
The Everyone brand uses no harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances, and is gentle on the hands. This one is my favorite, but they also come in multiple scents such as lavender, Lemongrass and unscented as well.
Baking Soda
This may seem obvious, but we use baking soda to clean literally everything. It is safe to use, and I have personally used it to make toothpaste and mouthwash before.
Now, this isn’t a plant-based home cleaner, but it is non-toxic and safe to use. Here is a list of 12 non-toxic ways you can use baking soda if you need some more ideas!
Floor Cleaner
What I Use: My own floor cleaning mixture
For Cleaning our floors, I always opt to make my own floor cleaner. We have a Swiffer, which came with a detachable cartridge that can be refilled.
We use Dr. Bronners Peppermint Castile Soap, Lemon juice, Eucalyptus oil and water. This mixture leaves the floors smelling wonderful, and not sticky or oily.
Have a healthy day!
