Why I Love Blueberry Muffins

My love affair with blueberry muffins started during my college years. Starbucks was my go-to study spot, and their blueberry muffins quickly became my favorite snack during study sessions. The burst of blueberries in every bite and the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness made them irresistible. Inspired by countless hours spent sipping coffee and savoring muffins, I set out to recreate this beloved bakery item at home. After numerous attempts and tweaks, I finally perfected a recipe that captures the essence of Starbucks’ blueberry muffins.

Tips for Perfect Blueberry Muffins

  • Fresh vs. Frozen Blueberries: Both fresh and frozen blueberries work well in this recipe and are incredibly healthy. If using frozen, do not thaw them before adding to the batter to prevent them from bleeding into the muffins.
  • Avoid Overmixing: Overmixing the batter can lead to dense muffins. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure that your eggs and milk are at room temperature for a smoother batter and better rise.

The Joy of Baking at Home

Baking these Starbucks Blueberry Muffins at home brings a sense of accomplishment and joy that is unmatched to simply buying something. There’s something incredibly satisfying about recreating a favorite bakery treat in your own kitchen. Plus, the aroma of freshly baked blueberry muffins filling your home is simply irresistible. We know we don’t often use sugar in recipes on this blog, but this was an exception. Also – eating portioned controlled sugar at home is better than purchasing things out where it’s hard to quantify the amount inside.

Why Homemade is Better

While Starbucks’ muffins are undeniably delicious, homemade muffins have their own charm. You can control the quality of ingredients, adjust sweetness levels to your preference, and even add extra blueberries if you like (I do this often – can never have too many blueberries). Moreover, baking at home is a cost-effective way to enjoy your favorite treats without breaking the bank.

Serving Suggestions

These blueberry muffins are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a mid-day snack. Here are some serving ideas:

  • With Coffee: Enjoy a muffin with a cup of freshly brewed coffee or your favorite Starbucks blend.
  • For Brunch: Serve alongside other brunch favorites like scrambled eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit.
  • As a Dessert: Pair with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful dessert.

Storing and Freezing

  • Storing: Keep the muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For extended freshness, store them in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Freezing: These muffins freeze absolutely beautifully. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then, transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or warm in the microwave before serving.

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon flour for coating blueberries
  • For the Crumb Topping:
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a muffin tin with paper liners or spray with non-stick cooking spray.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and ½ teaspoon of salt. Set aside.

Combine Wet Ingredients:

  • In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup of granulated sugar, ½ cup of melted butter, 1 cup of whole milk, 2 large eggs, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract until well combined.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:

  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter; it’s okay if there are a few lumps.

Fold in Blueberries:

  • Toss 1 ½ cups of blueberries with 1 tablespoon of flour (this prevents them from sinking to the bottom of the muffins). Gently fold the blueberries into the batter.

Prepare the Crumb Topping

    Mix Crumb Topping

    • In a small bowl, combine ½ cup of flour, ½ cup of granulated sugar, ¼ cup of cold cubed butter, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix the ingredients until they form a crumbly texture.
    • Step 3: Assemble and Bake

    Fill Muffin Tin:

    • Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tin, filling each cup about ¾ full.

    Add Crumb Topping:

    • Generously sprinkle the crumb topping over each muffin.

    Bake:

    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Allow the muffins to cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
